The Latest In Controversy Is ‘Manu-Gate’

emmanueladeboyorcelebrate

As we discussed last week, this young season has been full of controversy. First, we had ‘Eduardo-gate’ (now resolved), then ‘Kiddie-gate’, and now ‘Manu-gate’. Yes, I am over-using the ‘Gate’ thing, but can you over-do something that’s so overdone? And if you can, I don’t care, adding ‘Gate’ to things is fun to me.

In case you didn’t notice this weekend, ex-Arsenal and current Manchester City ‘star’ Emmanuel Adebayor took on his former team. And let’s just say that he had a full game. He scored a goal, kicked ex-teammate Robin Van Persie in the face and taunted the Arsenal fans with his goal celebration. And for all of this, he’s facing some serious suspensions. This story has it all, Adebayor is confused by all of the furor over his actions, manager Mark Hughes defends his player’s actions, Van Persie doesn’t accept Manu’s apology and even Roy Keane has given his two cents. La Liga might have the world’s top players, but the BPL has all of the drama. F*ck the new Melrose Place, this is must see TV.

In non-face stomping Arsenal news, Andrei Arshavin has put a gag order on his wife’s loose lips. Just thought you’d like to know.

Good news for Liverpool fans. After reporting on Liverpool ending their sponsorship agreement with Carlsberg, the club has reached an agreement with Standard Chartered Bank for an astounding £80m for four years. Word is the deal will enable the club to build their long rumored new stadium and even buy a player or two. Why do I think neither of these things will happen? Oh, right because it’s the Hicks and Gillett run Liverpool.

Roman Abromovich isn’t one known to be shy to splash the cash, but apparently all the money in the world won’t help you tackle Mount Kilimanjaro. After reportedly suffering from altitude related sickness, Chelsea has released a statement refuting that. Why they felt the need to do so, I have no idea. But in a world of 24-hour news coverage, ‘Altitude-gate’ is a story.

In some more money-related news, English clubs have pocketed nearly twice as much Champions League money as Spanish sides over the past six seasons. In fact England’s ‘Big Four’ hold the top four places among all Champions League clubs. Now those are some figures to make one dizzy, and then distribute a press release saying that you weren’t.

Who Lifts The Best Cup?

The European season’s over and the trophies have been awarded, but I wondered which one of the ‘top five’ leagues had the best trophy presentation. Watch all five below and let  me know what you think.

Vfl Wolfsburg is unquestionably the most shocking league champion of the season. The little club from the town famous for making Volkswagens, won their first ever Bundesliga title on the last day of the season. While I think the Bundesliga trophy is a little goofy looking, I did like the presentation ceremony.  Rating: 4 Stars

Power of the Ponytail

El pelo bueno.

El pelo bueno.

Step up Sergio Garcia; you’re the first winner of the Golden Comb. The Golden Comb goes to the player whose exploits on the pitch match the greatness of his hair. While there may be flashier hairstyles in La Liga than his stringy mess of a ponytail, Sergio scored the opening goal as Real Betis won at the home of their rivals Sevilla for the first time in thirteen years. That goal was the winger’s sixth in nineteen appearances for the club, proving that he was worth the ten million Euros Betis paid for him this summer. Now go hit the showers, and don’t forget to lather, rinse and repeat.

Not So Dreamy

More Picasso than Cruyff

More Picasso than Cruyff

In the early nineties, Barcelona could do little wrong. Four consecutive La Liga titles and the 1992 European Cup are proof of that. They were truly a Dream Team. But this shirt from 1995 was a huge mistake. It was the equivalent of Hammer pants: Over the top.

Welcome to Natural Hat Trick!

A fan for life.

A fan for life.

On behalf of myself, Steve Martin, and The Angry Drunk, I would like to welcome everyone to our site. Normally the Daily Thought will be a short article about whatever interesting football related topics that may have infiltrated our nocturnal thoughts (it’s not always visions of porno movie shoots). But on this, the first day of our site, I just wanted to introduce ourselves, and tell you why the hell we’re doing this. Our mission is simple – to celebrate all things football (La Liga, wasted WAGs, Indonesian U-15s, Stevie G in court, etc.) through original commentary, photos and videos. A grand ambition indeed, but as recession-hit, hopeless football addicts, we have nothing else to do. Fortunately, we have money to pay the cable bill, can still piggyback wi-fi off of our neighbors, and we even have some credit left at the corner deli. And surprisingly enough, this keeps the Drunk from drinking before noon. But in all seriousness, we want this to become a virtual pub for football fans: A place where you come to not only get information, but also to share your opinions. So we’ve included plenty of discussion topics, polls, and chat rooms to give our fellow football fans a proper voice. We want to hear your opinions, and hope that together, we can create an interactive community where football fans can come and get to know each other, learn from each other, and engage in meaningful discussion about the topics that affect the game we have love (non-so-meaningful friendly banter also more than encouraged). So drop us a note and tell us about yourselves, your favorite clubs and your favorite match day beverage.

Thanks for visiting,

P.S.: Much thanks to the Poopmaster for putting this thing together. And a shout out to the kids at WooThemes for a kick-ass theme and assistance.

P.P.S: Please forgive whatever glitches you may encounter while looking around. A good deal of this site was crafted with the help of Svedka vodka.
